🌱 Eating Seasonal, Local & Smart
To make this work well for everyone—and to truly keep costs down—we’re going to focus on seasonal, local produce whenever possible.
Ontario grows an incredible variety of fruits and vegetables throughout the year. When we stick to what’s in season and grown closer to home, we benefit in a few important ways:
Better flavour (produce picked at the right time simply tastes better)
Lower cost (less transportation = less expense)
Longer shelf life
Support for Canadian growers
You’ll find a downloadable Ontario Seasonal Food Guide on this page—feel free to use it as a reference when choosing your items.
🚛 Why This Matters
Many imported or “exotic” items travel long distances and rely heavily on fuel for transportation. With rising oil costs, those items can become significantly more expensive—often without the same freshness or quality.
By choosing local and seasonal options, we keep this system efficient, affordable, and sustainable.
🍑 A Different Way to Think About Food
Part of this process is shifting how we think about ingredients.
We don’t always need something from across the world when we have something excellent right here.
👉 Peaches are Ontario’s mangoes.
👉 Root vegetables in winter are just as versatile as summer produce.
👉 There’s always something in season that can do the job beautifully.

💬 Final Note
This is meant to be simple, practical, and beneficial for all of us.
The more we work with the seasons, the better this will go—and the more we’ll all get out of it.
